As most of my readers know, I'm a big proponent of modified factory air boxes rather than expensive intake systems. Not because I'm too cheap to buy an expensive intake system (I've owned many), but because they simply don't work as well. It also helps that modifying your own airbox (or even swapping to a bigger factory one) costs a lot less. Some articles from the past that contain some of the already presented evidence.<\/p>\n
Today I was out browsing the interwebs when I came across two Australian guys who have a youtube show where they modify cars in a fairly cheeky way, kind of like Top Gear meets Pimp My Ride or something. None the less, they have added \"myth busting\" to their show and so they did two great dyno shoot outs to test \"cold air intakes\" and \"pod filters\" versus factory air boxes. Needless to say, they found the factory stuff worked very well (the best) in various setups. <\/p>\n
I did a similar test about 4 years ago on a Civic and found exactly the same thing despite what the forums and magazines had tried to tell me. These days I run modified factory air boxes in everything whenever space permits.<\/p>\n
These videos are all the more reason to consider doing your own airbox modifications using a differential pressure meter to guide you in your modding. I talked about how to do that in the intelligent modification series (talked about above), but I will also soon be putting together a product which will walk you through exactly how to use a differential pressure meter to do airbox mods and how to use other inexpensive tools to make sure you get ACTUAL power out of your car, instead of marketing lip service.<\/p>\n
